Château d’Entrecasteaux
The castle of Entrecasteaux, Château d’Entrecasteaux, is a former eleventh century stronghold, rebuilt in the fifteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The most notable inhabitants of Entrecasteaux castle are: – Francois de Grignan, son-in-law of Madame de Sevigne – Admiral Bruny D’Entrecasteaux, born1737 in Aix-en Provence, sent in 1791 by Louis XVI to the South Pacific in search of La Perouse. On July 20, 1793 towards the end of the expedition d’Entrecasteax died of scurvy and dysentery, – Jean Baptiste, Marquis d’Entrecasteaux, President of the Parliament of Provence, born in 1761, murdered his wife in 1784.
After decades of neglect, the castle was restored by Iain Lachlan McGarvie-Munn with his father Hugh Ian McGarvie-Munn (1919-1981). Iain continued the restoration and made the castle into a cultural center until he sold it in 1996, Alain Gayral, its present owner, continued the restoration, redecorated it and added his collection of antiques.
